Dr. Blumenthal Leaves With an Impressive Record of Achievement

Everybody in the HITECH/EHR Incentive trenches has got to be feeling a bit abandoned with the announcement that Dr. Blumenthal will be leaving his post as the ONC National Coordinator this spring.

Dr. Blumenthal, and the team he has put together, have achieved some very remakable things in a very short period of time. He will depart with our thanks and very best wishes as he returns to his post at Harvard.

For those of us that are a bit stunned of this turn of events, I suspect that the following post is very close to the reality of Dr. Blumenthal’s motivations:

Steven J. Davidson, MD, MBA Says:
This is quite straightforward and all could/should have expected this. He’s a Harvard Full Professor on leave. Harvard allows a two year leave and then it’s come back or move on–no extensions.

Has he had a tough job and taken his share of beatings? Yes, of course. Still, he’s going back to academic leadership roles at Harvard which has been his life. As a former academic, this choice makes sense to me.

I look forward to adding to the ovation that Dr. Bluenthal will surely receive at HIMSS11 in Orlando later this month.
